Meet the Camp Management Team:
Director of Camp at the J
Nikki Downey joins Mayerson JCC as Director of Camp at the J. Nikki received a Master’s in Recreation and Sports Management from Florida International University and is also a certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, certified Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Instructor. Nikki will be responsible for the development, implementation and promotion of camp programs and activities for children as well as the hiring, training, and supervision of camp staff. Prior to the JCC, Nikki worked as a Recreation Specialist at the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, Camp Director of the City of Naples River Park Community Center, and Senior Program Director of the Greater Naples YMCA.
Assistant Camp Director
Brett has worked at the JCC as a teacher in the After School Program and Coordinator for the PJ Library Program. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2015 where he studied Judaic Studies and Organizational Leadership. Brett has loved meeting families in Cincinnati through his work with PJ Library and looks forward to the getting to know everyone at camp!
“Coach Mike”… “Mr. Mike”… or just plain, Mike… no matter what you call him, he’s been a beloved part of the JCC landscape since 2001, leading kids’ classes, coaching sports teams and of course, working at Camp at the J. Mike is a former US Army Captain and bio chemistry teacher with a BS in biology and chemistry from Georgetown College and other degrees from University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. He is probably best known by Camp at the J campers and parents for showing up at car line in a different crazy costume each day to help set the tone for fun!
Christina “Teeny” Zaffiro
Manager of Extended Day Programs
Teeny attended Miami University and graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She has experience as a Nature Specialist, camp Unit Head and is also in charge of overseeing all the camp specialty areas and the camp’s extended care program. During the school year, she also runs the JCC’s popular After Crew afterschool program!
Teen LIT/CIT Coordinator
Phil is so excited to lead our Golani Teen Camp this summer. He is currently the Teen Coordinator at the JCC, which entails leading BBYO and coordinating the annual March of the Living trip. Phil graduated from Ohio University in 2014 with a BA in Political Science. He grew up going to JCC day camp, Camp Livingston, and Goldman Union Camp Institute. Camp has always been an integral part of his identity. He looks forward to working with Golani Teens and knows that it will be an outstanding summer with awesomeness planned!
James graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education. For the last 10 years, James has filled every role possible at Camp at the J which includes counselor, senior counselor, unit head and program coordinator at the J. While working these many years at camp he has accumulated certifications in First Aid, CPR, Archery Instruction, and Mental Health First Aid. When he is not at camp he spends his days educating and chasing toddlers in the JCC Early Childhood School as a lead teacher, an coaching basketball. In the rare moments he is not at the JCC or coaching basketball, James plays in the JCC Men’s Softball League and loves to add to his sock collection.
JOFEE FELLOW (Jewish Outdoor Farming & Environmental Education)
As the J’s JOFEE Fellow, Josh plans programs that focus on integrating Judaism into Outdoors and Environmental Education. Josh graduated from Ohio University with a BA in Fine Arts. He grew up going to Goldman Union Camp Institute as a camper and counselor for five years. He is looking forward to another summer of teaching the nature program and the importance of being immersed in the outdoors.
