Camp at the J Summer Camp in Cincinnati

Working at Camp at the J is a fantastic way to spend your summer months. Not only will you be engaged in all the fun-filled activities camp has to offer, you’ll also further develop your leadership and communication skills. You’ll work alongside our senior staff who have several years of camp experience and knowledge, and are dedicated to showing you the ropes of camp life.

Each summer, we are looking for excited individuals to fill the following positions:

  • Counselors and Senior Counselors: Our Counselors and Senior Counselors work with Unit Heads to implement age-appropriate, intriguing, and exciting camp programs and activities. They provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for our day campers.
  • Advocate Counselors: Our Advocate Counselors work with the Inclusion Coordinator, Counselors, and Units Heads to implement camp programs and activities and adapt them as necessary for special needs.
  • Specialist: Our Specialists work with the Camp Director to develop and implement special activities and programs.

Counselor

To work with the Senior Counselor and Unit Head in the implementation of age-appropriate, intriguing, and exciting camp programs and activities, and provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for JCC day campers.

Responsible to: Senior Counselor/Unit Head

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Follow Camp at the J and JCC policies and procedures
  • Participate in staff training sessions and orientation prior to the start of camp season
  • Create an inclusive camp environment
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Keep Senior Counselor and Unit Head informed of any camper issues
  • Implement routines, schedules, and procedures for the operation of the bunk
  • Maintain positive working relationship with all camp staff
  • Implement programs with staff, following the objectives and outline of the camp
  • Assist with instructional swim and recreational swim as directed
  • Know each camper in your bunk
  • Know all camp staff
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of the campers in the bunk
  • Never leave campers unattended; never be alone with a camper
  • Share in the implementation of activities
  • Participate in group and specialist activities
  • When/where applicable, help facilitate Jewish learning in camp programs
  • Share responsibility for the care of unit equipment, and cleanliness of camp facilities with other staff
  • Assist in the implementation of any unit late night or overnight programs
  • Attend and participate in any Unit late night or overnight programs and Family Night activities, if applicable
  • Assist in arrival and dismissal of campers
  • Exhibit a high level of energy and enthusiasm

  • Minimum 16 years of age and/or must be entering the 11th or 12th grade of high school

Senior Counselor

To work with the unit head in the implementation of age-appropriate, intriguing, and exciting camp programs and activities, and provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for JCC day campers.  Serves as the lead counselor in the bunk.

Advocate Counselor

To work with the camp Inclusion Coordinator, Counselors, and Unit Head in the implementation of age-appropriate, intriguing, and exciting camp programs and activities, adapting activities as needed, and provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for JCC day campers. This position may work 1:1 with an assigned camper or work closely with 1:2 campers.

Responsible to: Unit Head and Camp Inclusion Coordinator

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Follow camp and JCC policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff training sessions and orientation prior to the start of camp season.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Create an inclusive camp environment.
  • Work with Unit Head and Inclusion Coordinator to assist in the development of individualized behavior plans.
  • Assist campers as needed (this may involve bathroom assistance, implementation of routines, schedules, and procedures, and meals).
  • Assist Aquatics staff with instructional swim and recreational swim as directed.
  • Keep co-counselors, camp Inclusion Coordinator, and Unit Head informed of any camper issues.
  • Encourage interaction between campers with special needs and other campers in bunk.
  • Know each camper in your bunk.
  • Know all camp staff.
  • Provide the opportunity for success for all participants by adapting activities, managing behaviors, and providing any additional assistance as needed.
  • Help group counselor to plan and carry out all activities. Insure that all campers are involved, safe and having a positive experience.
  • Work with camp Inclusion Coordinator to create and implement goals for “assigned” camper.
  • Never leave campers unattended; never be alone with a camper.
  • Share in the implementation of activities.
  • Share responsibility for the care of Unit equipment, and cleanliness of camp facilities with other staff.
  • Attend all Open House, Family Nights, and other camp programs.

Specialist

To plan, develop, and coordinate age-appropriate, intriguing, and exciting specialty activities, and provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for JCC day campers.

Responsible to: Camp Director

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Follow camp and JCC policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff training sessions and orientation prior to the start of camp season.

  • Lead specialty session during staff training.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Keep camp director informed of any camper or staff issues.
  • Develop and implement routines, schedules, and procedures for specialty activities.
  • Maintain positive working relationship with camp staff.
  • Plan and implement lesson plans, following the objectives and outline of the camp to be turned into Camp Director 2 weeks in advance.
  • Develop supply list at least two weeks prior to need of supplies and submit to Camp Director.
  • Learn names of each camper and staff.
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of the campers and staff.
  • Responsible for the care of specialty equipment and cleanliness of camp facilities.
  • Prepare newsletter articles informing parents of specialty activities.
  • Remain with assigned bunk to act as a counselor when not preparing for a lesson or instructing a lesson.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of the family night activities.
  • Assist in arrival and dismissal of campers.
  • Exhibit a high level of energy and enthusiasm.
  • Remain flexible and available to carry forth with all camp related activities.
  • Assist in the evaluation of specialty activities at the conclusion of camp.

Head Advocate

Work with Camp Director to plan, develop, and coordinate age-appropriate, intriguing, and exciting camp programs and activities, supervise counselors, and provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for JCC day campers.  Provide assistance in groups of adapting activities as needed, and run a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for JCC day campers.  This position may work 1:1 with an assigned camper or work closely with 1:2 campers.
