Mayerson JCC Disability Inclusion Awareness MonthAdvocacy, Education, Acceptance

The Mayerson JCC will honor disabilities awareness with a month of educational and inclusive programming. From adventures with Madcap Puppets to a meaningful afternoon with advocate and comedian Pam Schuller, we’ll celebrate the things that make each person unique.

These programs are generously funded by Paul Heldman and Deborah Kirshner.

Events

Tuesday Lecture with the Seniors
March 14, 10:30 – 11:30am

Each year People Working Cooperatively provides thousands of low – income, elderly, and disabled homeowners with a higher quality of living. Their professionally trained staff and volunteers help Ohio residents with critical home repairs, energy conservation and weatherization, mobility modifications, and maintenance services. PWC will be speaking to the JCC Senior community and their families about how to modify their living situation for aging.


Exploration of different Mobility Apparatuses in JCC Early Childhood School
March 15, 9 – 11am | For Early Childhood School students

Students will attend an experiential session in the muscle room where they will learn about different modes of mobility. For example, students will see, touch, and use a wheelchair to further understand its use.


Lunch & Learn with Hadas Silver
March 17, 12:30 – 1:30pm | Bring your own lunch

Hadas will discuss her relationship with those who have disabilities through her experience working at Krembo Wings, a group in Israel providing inclusive youth programming. She will also be available to answer any questions you may have about the spirit of inclusion.


Pam Schuller, Inclusion Speaker
March 26, 1pm; Teen event at 2pm

Comedian and advocate Pam Schuller will take the stage to share her extraordinary story of personal growth and success in the face of Tourette Syndrome. As a graduate of Knox College and Montclair State University, Schuller is a nationally – known advocate that has created improvisational theater programs as a tool for youth with disabilities. Schuller embraces what makes herself unique and calls on communities to view inclusion differently.

Teen Event: Teens will be laughing and learning together! Pam pairs experiential education with improv theater to create a space where teens can connect to the ideas and themes of creating a more inclusive community.


Whose Life is it, Anyway?
March 27, 12:30 – 1:30pm

Join Barb Thomas from the TALL Institute, an organization committed to encouraging individuals with developmental challenges to come together in a safe and welcoming environment, for this engaging Lunch ‘n Learn. Find out everything you need to know about assisting others in making healthy sexual and social choices.


Chaverut and PJ LibraryChaverut and PJ Library
March 29, 9 – 10:30am | For Early Childhood School students

Students will be read a book about people with disabilities from our PJ Library, and then work with each other in creating sensory toys that campers can use during the summer when they need time away from their groups.


A discussion on Special Education Law and Advocacy
March 29, 6:30 – 8:30pm

Do you know if your child is receiving all the support and services that they are guaranteed by state and federal law? Do you have questions about IEP’s, 504 plans, extended year services, or just daily school services? Join Carla Leader for an educational seminar on your child’s rights and the steps you can take to ensure their well-being. Leader has been a practicing attorney for over 16 years and has devoted her time specifically to the area of Special Education Law and Advocacy since 2012. She has been instrumental in ensuring that her clients receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) from school districts across Ohio.


BBYO Gives Back
April 4, 6:30 – 8pm | Open to teens of all abilities

Join us for this inclusive BBYO event! Teens will come together to create shabbat candles and package canned food items to benefit Jewish Family Service’s Food Pantry.

Adaptive Basketball
Ages 18+ | March 2, 23, 30, April 13 & 27, May 11 & 25, 7 – 8pm

For adults with intellectual disabilities, who are able to participate independently. This inclusive class offers team – focused exercises and opportunities to socialize.

Adaptive Zumba
Ages 18+ | March 9, April 6 & 20, 7 – 8pm

For adults with intellectual disabilities who are able to participate independently. This class offers high – energy Latin moves and dancing. No dance skills are required.

Adaptive Water Fitness
